2004, Belgium, Germany

September 9-16, 2004

It is time to return to Brussels to attend Arnaud Fieve's college graduation, our Belgium 1998-1999 foreign exchange student, and see again our old friend Wolfgang Mauritz whose son, Jakob, was an exchange student the same time as Arnaud. We know a lot has happened over the past four years.

Changing trains from Amsterdam for Osnabruck, Germany at Amersfoort, Netherlands

Hamburg, Germany

After meeting Wolfgang at his home in Osnabruck, Germany, we took a train to Hamburg where we caught up with a group of German seniors in Hamburg.

Hamburg, a major seaport where the Elbe River flows into the North Sea.

The canals of Hamburg are full of smaller ferry and fishing boats.

The old warehouses are now expensive apartments.

Now a major tourist attraction housing the trendy "Fish Market" and serving as subway hub.

Landungsbrücken, 1900
How it may have looked when my grandparents immigrated in 1913 with thousands of Russians and other Eastern Europeans as they were herded like cattle as they boarded the German-American Steamship Lines boats for America.

Brussels and Arnaud's Graduation

Back in Brussels.
Our four star hotel in the Arabian district didn't quite live up to its internet ratings.
Ah the pleasures and surprises of travel.

Ceremony much more subdued than at an American graduation.

Luc, Arnaud's father, and Francoise, his mother.

Stepanie, Arnaud's significant other.

a short walk from our hotel.

Now owned by someone else.

Happy Times.

A Raclette Dinner
Cheeses, meats, veggies prepared on your own at the table on a raclette grill.
Throw in good wine with a wonderful young couple and you have the makings of a worthwhile trip.
